Boots add warmth and style to fall and winter outfits.

After wearing sandals and flip-flops throughout summer, fall and winter allow women to buy or pull out boots. It’s a different manner of dressing, because instead of throwing on shoes at the last minute before heading out the door, boots require a bit of thinking as to what type of outfit with which to wear them.

Tall Boots

Although some women wear tall boots over jeans, this can be difficult to avoid a bunch of fabric around the ankle – jeans need to be very slim and the boots a little wider to fit comfortably.

Tall boots work best with dresses or skirts, usually paired with tights. Then the boot material is not competing with the pant fabric, and both outfit and shoe look get equal attention.

Suede Boots

Although obviously not intended for rainy weather, suede boots are warm, comfortable and fashionable. Many suede boots this season are lined with a real or faux shearling (sheepskin), which makes them extra cozy. This look can be a little more casual than leather; it’s a perfect boot to wear with jeans and a sweater on a weekend day. They’re a familiar look for winter; if one doesn’t live in a cold climate, choosing faux shearling makes the boots breathe more (and won’t be too hot to wear in moderate temperatures.)

Rain Boots

Leather works best for the rain; in heavy rain, patent leather is also an option because water literally falls off the fabric instead of absorbing at all. Soles of rain boots should have a firm grip; the sole should not be slick. Bottoms similar to those seen in driving moccasins, such as pebble soles, work well.

Nearly every department store website or catalog has a selection of boots for winter. Designer boots are routinely pricey, especially because they require more material than a regular shoe.
